Advancing Care for Adolescents and Young Adults
Adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients represent a unique group navigating complex challenges spanning diagnosis, clinical trial access, place of care, and specialized psychosocial support. Traditional models split between adult and pediatric oncology often fall short of their specific needs. To bridge this gap, the SSPHO AYA Working Group, chaired by Dr. med. Maria Otth and vice-chaired by Dr. med. et Dr. sc. nat. Eva Brack, is actively driving systemic improvements across Switzerland.
Recent Milestones and Ongoing Initiatives
The Working Group has maintained a strong momentum through regular bi-monthly online exchanges and key national contributions:
SOHC 2025 Sessions: Organized dedicated expert sessions on bone sarcoma, oncological rehabilitation, and the national strategy for AYA oncology.
National Position Paper: Currently preparing an official position paper to define standard guidelines and improve the care landscape.
Collaboration and Outreach: Strengthening partnerships with AYA Cancer Support and organizing upcoming information events tailored for both healthcare professionals and the public.
Mapping and Needs Assessment: Actively evaluating current AYA practices, fertility preservation access, financial burdens, and transition models between pediatric and adult care.
Improving AYA oncology requires an interdisciplinary approach. The SSPHO AYA Working Group welcomes all ordinary and extraordinary SSPHO members with an interest and expertise in the field.
